Open Top Tanks

2 open top cylindrical tank inside of a chemical facility

Open Top Poly Tanks for Mixing, Batching, and Open Processing

Open top tanks are straight-sided poly tanks with a fully open top, built for jobs where you need constant access to the contents: mixing, batching, dosing, dip processing, and short-term liquid storage. Tank Superstore carries cylindrical and rectangular open top tanks in polyethylene and polypropylene, in capacities from 2 to over 1,500 gallons, with covers available for many models.

What Is an Open Top Tank Used For?

Open top tanks are working tanks. Unlike closed storage tanks, the open design gives you full access for adding ingredients, stirring or agitating, drawing samples, and cleaning between batches.

✓  Chemical mixing and batching ✓  Water treatment dosing
✓  Plating and dip tanks ✓  Food processing
✓  Aquaculture ✓  General utility storage

Cylindrical or Rectangular: How to Choose

Cylindrical

The standard choice for mixing. The round wall has no corners for material to collect in, which makes agitation more even and cleanout faster. If your process involves a mixer or recirculation, start cylindrical.

Rectangular

Makes better use of tight floor space and fits along walls, under benches, and inside cabinets and machinery. The usual pick for dip tanks and rinse stations. Wall flex increases with size, so larger models often pair with a support stand or frame.

Polyethylene vs Polypropylene

Most open top tanks are molded in polyethylene (PE), which handles a broad range of chemicals and temperatures and is the economical default. Polypropylene (PP) models step up the temperature tolerance and resist certain chemicals that attack PE.

Before you order: chemical compatibility depends on the specific liquid, its concentration, and its temperature, so confirm the material rating against your chemical before ordering. Our team can help you check a specific combination.

Sizing and Fit

Open top tanks in this range run from 2 gallons up to more than 1,500 gallons. When sizing, check three numbers against your space and process:

1 Capacity, matched to your batch or storage volume.
2 Outside dimensions, especially height if the tank sits under equipment.
3 Wall thickness, for the duty you have in mind.

Every product page lists full dimensions and specifications.

Covers, Accessories, and Related Tanks

Many open top tanks have matching lids or covers available to keep dust and debris out between uses. If your application needs a sealed or vented closed-top tank instead, these categories cover full-drain and enclosed storage:
