How Septic Tank Sizing Works
Two things decide the size of a septic tank: how much wastewater the property produces in a day, and what your state or county sets as a minimum for a system of that size. The calculator above handles both, because the minimum is not the same everywhere.
You can start from either input. Enter the number of bedrooms, which is what most codes use, or enter the daily flow in gallons if you already know it, which is more common on commercial and agricultural sites.
Sizing by Bedroom Count
Almost every residential code sizes septic tanks by bedroom count rather than by the number of people living in the house. That looks strange until you consider why: occupancy changes, bedrooms do not. A code written around bedrooms sizes for the house rather than for whoever happens to live there this year.
What that means in practice is that bedrooms are a proxy for peak occupancy, and the minimum capacity steps up in brackets as bedroom count rises.
Things that change the bracket
- A garbage disposal. Some states count one as an additional bedroom, because it adds solids and volume to the tank
- Floor area. A few states, Texas among them, take the higher of the bedroom bracket and a floor area bracket, so a large house with few bedrooms can still need a bigger tank
- Bathroom count. Some jurisdictions factor this in alongside bedrooms
This is why a generic bedroom chart is not much use. The calculator asks for your state so it can apply the right rule rather than a national average.
The estimate is a starting point. Local authorities can require more than the state minimum, and some size on fixture count or occupancy instead of bedrooms. Confirm the requirement with your local health department or a licensed installer before you order.

Why the Minimum Differs by State
Septic sizing is set at state level and sometimes tightened again at county level, so the same house can require a different tank in two neighbouring jurisdictions. States write their rules around local soil conditions, groundwater, climate and how their permitting process works, and they are revised independently.

If You Need More Than 1,500 Gallons
1,500 gallons is the largest single tank in our standard range. Larger applications are usually handled with multiple tanks plumbed in series rather than one oversized tank, which is common on commercial sites, multi family properties and anywhere daily flow is high.
